So today I had been scheduled to have the laser surgery done to permanently correct my nearsightedness, because glasses were such a pain in the ass, and there's no way I'd use contacts because I hate being touched around my eyes, I'd never be able to get them in. So finally we decided for my birthday to get the eye exam to see if I was a candidate for the surgery.
Luckily I was a great candidate for it, much to my excitement and pleasure 8D. So then we scheduled the time for the actual surgery, which was today. It's not major surgery though, as some would think. A bit complex, yet straight forward. The actual time spent under the laser after both eyes, was maybe 15 minutes at most, then I was done! Amazing what modern day technology can do isn't it?
So of course they give you a bunch of drops before, along with some Valium for relaxing, and throughout the process to keep the eye moist and such, and numb. Very numb, thankfully. There was no pain from the laser itself, more the clamp thing that kept your eyelids open >.< The actual process: (copied and pasted from website XD)
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced. There are other techniques and many new terms related to LASIK that you may hear about.
Sounds like a big deal, but really its not. You just lay there looking at a blinking light for a focus. In the waiting room to go in, they had a screen that was connected to a camera in what must have been the laser device, so you could actually see what the machine does. It was awesome, but I love watching that kind of stuff. Made me a bit nervous but they all said that's perfectly normal.
And oh my god what a difference! I could see better the moment I sat up and looked around. While my vision was still a big foggy from the drops and process, it was like seeing out a newly cleaned window. I can see far away in perfect 20/20 vision. Only draw back after the surgery, is for atleast a couple hours your eyes do sting and ache, but they give you some painkillers for it afterwards to take, with a snack XD I got cookies, they were yummy. I slept on the way home due to the Valium still in me. Your eyes feel really heavy after its over lol. when we got home I took a good 2-3 hour nap, which was preferred I do anyway. And by the time I woke up the stinging had faded. I have to take a series of drops today every two hours though, and tomorrow for the next 6 days 4 times a day, minus one drop that will run out tonight.
So take it from me, those of you interested in this proceedure, IT WORKS!!! And though it's expensive, so worth it.
And if any are interested, here's exactly what happens, and what you'd see during the treatment. WARNING: GRAPHIC. This is slightly different from what happened to me though, I didn't bleed O_o This must a similar or slightly older treatment. But is basically what goes on.
